Judiciary Leaders Inspire Youth at Inter-University Leadership Conference

The Female Lawyers Network (FLN)today held an Inter-University Leadership Conference at the National ICT Innovation Hub, in Nakawa, drawing more than 500 students from various institutions for discussions on professionalism, ethics, and transformative leadership. The forum highlighted the vital role of young people in shaping Uganda’s justice system, governance, and public service.

Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, the Principal Judge, presided over the event as Guest of Honour. In her remarks, she underscored the importance of professionalism, strong moral values, and ethical conduct in leadership. Justice Abodo observed that young people today stand at a crossroads of rapid change, and the discipline, integrity, and values they cultivate will influence the future direction of national leadership. She encouraged students to embrace responsibility, respect for time, diligence, and principled decision-making, describing them as essential foundations for trustworthy leadership. She added that transformative leadership demands not only competence but also empathy, moral clarity, and a commitment to the common good.

Lady Justice Monica Kalyegira Mugenyi of the Supreme Court also addressed the students, emphasising that youth are uniquely positioned to drive justice reforms, inspire civic participation, and contribute to building a fair and inclusive society. She urged them to develop a strong personal brand, pursue excellence, and seek opportunities to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s development. Justice Mugenyi further highlighted the importance of technology in empowering young leaders to participate in global justice debates, digital advocacy, and solutions-driven engagement.

The Head of Wakiso High Court Circuit, Lady Justice Sarah Langa Siu, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on "Building a Justice-Centric Mindset Among Youth: Fostering Integrity, Fairness, and Accountability." She encouraged young people to practise ethical leadership in their daily actions, noting that integrity shown in small decisions strengthens institutional trust and national character.

The Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Judiciary, Dr. Pius Bigirimana, delivered the main keynote address on "Nurturing Excellence and an Ethical Public-Service Mindset Among Youth for Transformative Leadership." He called on students to anchor their aspirations indiscipline, patriotism, professionalism, and integrity, describing these virtues as the pillars of a responsible and visionary generation of leaders.

Participants left motivated to lead with integrity, fairness, and a renewed sense of responsibility toward building a just and accountable society.

Notably present were Dr. Patricia Achan (Deputy Inspector General of Government) and Dr. Nalunga Joyce, President of the Female Lawyers Network.
